Stream Etiquette

NCCoffeeHouse
You would think this would be pretty self explanatory but sadly it's not... stream etiquette something I think most people know but there are a few who don't. those who don't know this are often very defensive of their spot and will come after with the same rage as a neo-Nazi in a hatchback that you cut off two intersections back.
In this article I will talk about how to be polite on the stream and how to deal with those who are the road-ragers of the stream. I have no doubt most people out there are polite in social situation .

How to be polite on the stream:
When you're out fishing and you find a spot that already has a fly fisherman in it, it is quite alright to fish on the over side of the stream as long as it is wide enough. What's not alright is fishing on the other side and casting over their line. This will piss even the calmest fisherman off. If your fishing up a stream and you come up on another fisherman don't pass him in the stream. Get out of the stream and walk a solid distance ahead or go to another spot. If you pass them and start fishing only a few yard upstream you will spook any truth the other fisherman is attempting to catch.
Dealing with crazy fisherman: If you're peacefully fishing and a fellow fly fisherman rolls up on you and starts causing trouble don't get to worried. There are hundreds and hundreds of miles of streams that you can fish. Having one a-hole ruin the entire day for is just not worth it.
Last year I was fishing up in the upper three of Wilson creek. I was killing it that day pulling in fish after fish and it was wonderful. About 30 minutes after I started fishing this one spot,  an older gentleman and his family start fishing 20 yards up the stream. This wasn't a problem for me, until they started casting down stream. I was a little agitated at first but I'm a pretty calm person so I let it go. Not even five minutes later they started casting exactly where I was. They started tangling with my line and started to get mad at me. Eventually I said screw it and moved on. You don't want to be that person.
So in conclusion you should enjoy fishing. Don't let snobby fisherman raise your blood pressure. Fishing is an art and should be enjoyed as one.
