One of my favorite places to fish in North Carolina has to be stone mountain. Stone Mountain is located just west of Pilot Mountain. With its towering stone dome and plentiful fishing environment it is the perfect place to take a weekend trip to.
Stone Mountain has both a delayed harvest and stocked stream. The stocked stream starts at the bottom of Stone Mountain park just by the entrance. From there on up it is almost all delayed harvest there is another section near the top of the park that is stocked. When I say stocked stream I really do mean STOCKED. Theses water both delayed harvest and stocked are filled to the brim with rainbow and brown trout.
If you’ve read my earlier post about casting you might have seen that i said there was no need for any fancy casts due to the lack of room on the streams. Stone mountain is one of the few exceptions. This stream is wide enough at some points to execute a switch-T cast. So, feel free to open up and have fun with your casting.
In the early fall this area has a huge stone bug hatch and fish love it. You'll have the best luck using a brown stonefly, prince nymph, or brown and copper midge. With the right lure is is quite feasible to catch 15 fish or more in a day.
Alternatively you could drive an extra hour in the morning to go to Helton creek just off the new river. This creeks is a delayed harvest creek that's just chalk full of beautiful fish.
My only bone to pick with the Stone Mountain, Helton creek area is the sleeping arrangements. You have two options when you go up there. You can either stay south of Stone Mountain in the Freeborne lodge or north of Stone Mountain in the High Meadows Inn. Now both of these places are exceptional places to grab a bite to eat and rest your head. The only problem is, they are both about an hour from any fishing spot on Stone Mountain. That's alright though. The Freeborne lodge is a biker lodge that cateres to just about anyone. The room is very clean and the staff is exceptional. The High Meadows inn is also very clean. There aren't many staff at the High Meadows, but they do have the equivalent of a five star restaurant just under the hotel. I really do mean they have some great food!
Wherever you decide to stay, Stone Mountain is one of the best places in North Carolina. The combination of beautiful scenery and stellar fishing is a mix that has me going up there every other trip .
